As a young father, I frequently took my oldest kids on bike rides. They would ride their own bikes and master the skills needed to navigate the community. Once my two-year-old, Tate, figured out what was going on he wanted to come too but we had nowhere to put him. He was left there crying in Mama's arms until we would return. A couple of times I tried to sit him on the top tube but it never worked.
Soon after, I assembled a make-shift seat that clamped on to the seat post and provided a small set of handlebars for him to hold on. It was an instant success. Tate could now go with us on all our bike rides! The seat became known as the Tate Toter. This prototype worked so well that we have continued using it for all our kids and five years later it is still one of their favorite activities. My favorite part is that they are right there in front of me where I can talk and interact with them. It is also very easy to install and remove. In 30 seconds I can go from hard-core mountain biking to a family bike ride with no hardware left behind.
We started taking the TykeToter everywhere our bike went. We took it on our camping trips and road trips, to Grandma's house, etc. We almost never leave on a trip without it. Those who saw me out and about toting my kids around were always staring and asking questions about the seat and wondering where they could get one. As this continued, I started formulating a business plan that would enable everyone to have one of these and I could still keep my day job.
They love every minute of it. In fact, they have so much fun that my older kids are constantly asking if they can try it again. Even though they don't fit very well, they are all smiles and it has become the most coveted seat on our family bike rides.
We hope you enjoy yours as much as we do!
